Originally created by comedienne Lizz Winstead, and anchored by Craig Kilborn (previously from ESPN), the Daily Show went off the air for a brief period of time once Winstead left. At that point, Jon Stewart (previously of the aptly-named "The Jon Stewart Show") picked up as executive producer and turned the late-night show into an evening phenomenon.
Bill O'Reilly has termed the audience "stoned slackers," though the show has managed to have guests ranging from John Leguziamo to Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts.
In 2005, the show created a "spin-off" of sorts when "senior correspondent" Stephen Colbert headed up "The Colbert Report," which airs immediately after The Daily Show.
