Jake and Alex http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/tech/rss <![CDATA[Scanner Darkly [2006]: Just as unintellible as the book]]> http://www.riffs.com/movies/10591447/10548/ http://www.riffs.com/movies/10591447/10548/ <![CDATA[Repulsion [1965]: Wonderful slow descent into madness Over the top at the end]]> A slow descent into madness.  Wonderful cinemaphotography in living Black and White.  Many scenes shot in real time.  Polanski has many homages to Hitchcock in this, including his walk on as a spoons player.  Interesting return to scenes multiple times, gaining new insight and meaning each time, whether it is the church bells or the slowly spoiling rabbit.  Catherine Deneuve is on screen practically the entire time.  There is little spoken dialogue and this wonderful actress carries the movie in one of her early roles.

     Watch out for those sexy rapist walls.

Rated 4 needles up.]]> Selby is wonderful - see also his other novels, esp Last Exit to Brooklyn.  He creates good characters who become crushed by the world that they inhabit.

Ellen Burstyn is great, and her role of trying to get a life as her life spirals out of control is wonderful.  The other characters also disintergrate in a believable way. 

I don't find the edgy music and the "eyes on drug cuts" disturbing at all.  He creates a mood, and we become caught up in it, fascinated by the destruction that we see coming; unable to turn away.
