the first time i was passing through sf, i went to great lengths to
drive over the bridge perfectly at sunrise. i got a magnificent
view of the wall of fog tends to sweep through there around that
time. ha ha.

see it at sunset

I drove across this bridge every day for years and still do it about
once a month. If you can do it in a convertible at sunset, particularly
going from North to South (into the city) it's spectacular. Or just
walk across anytime but bring a coat or sweater, it is always cold, no
matter what the temperature is like elsewhere. This spot is the lowest
place on the coast line of northern California, and the heat rising
from the northern valleys (Napa and Sonoma) causes cold air off the
Pacific to rush into the bay here- which is why SF is so foggy and cold
in the summer. It makes for some spectacular bridge views- I've seen
the bottom half obscured by fog but the top in sun, and vice versa.
During the 50th anniversary party it was closed to vehicles so you
could walk across the pavement- so many people went onto the bridge
that it's signature arched bed flattened right oput and the cables
threatened to snap. That was an awesome sight. Once I saw a sub
(rumored to be nuclear) surface just under the bridge and then drop out
of sight heading into the bay. Explore the fort at the base on teh San
Francisco side- where soem great scenes from Vertigo were filmed and
you'll get to feel some ocean spray.

Whenever i saw this bridge (usually while totally aggravated about the
traffic), for a moment i felt really awed. Now I live very far
away, but I do have a photo on my cell that occasionally
makes me smile.

the symbol of northern california

the golden gate bridge is the san francisco icon that every east coast
person can picture. it's legendary. so to come upon it
somewhat haphazardly while on the tail end of a long day of driving, as
the sun's going down, as traffic's heating up, was to be thrust into
california in a most thorough and unexpected way. it's
stunning... i can only hope to walk across it next time.
