The man who ended slavery gets his head on the smallest unit of currency possible, but the man who wanted the turkey to be our national bird is on the hundred dollar bill and is popularized by rap stars. It just doesn't seem fair.

This is embarrassing and perhaps medically alarmiong, but I went through a brief secret phase when I was about 4 when I would sneak into our dining room with the jar of pennies at the foot of our stairs and swallow a few pennies. I can remember how they tasted--metallic and dirty. Gross! The weird part is that I was afraid to swallow pills (was one of those kids who insisted on chewable for ages), so I don't know why I found it so easy to swallow coins?!

Man, did I just totally freak everyone out?

not only am i totally against this nonsense as a unit of currency, but peope forget that we're strip mining arizona to get the metal for them. round off to 5 cents people!!

why the hatred of the penny? is it not worth enough for you? and why the love affair with things divisible by 5? what's the deal?

having the penny is important, because people with little money can find and procure pennies more easily than they can other coins. getting rid of the penny would take away a valuable... uh... revenue stream for some people.

i love a lot of john tierney's crazy ideas, but not the one to eliminate the penny (not that he originated the idea)

.99 stores? Something costing $1.03? Does this make any sense?

It would be much simpler all around if the United States just started a pricing policy that gave everything an ending total of .X5 or .X0. The penny has outlived its usefulness.
